Wei is the smallest unit of Ether. One Ether equals 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 wei (1018 wei). Wei is named after Wei Dai, a cryptographer who contributed to early cryptocurrency concepts. He developed bmoney, which laid the groundwork for smart contracts.
Ether powers the Ethereum network by paying for computational resources. Gas costs depend on transaction complexity and current gas prices. Gas fees are typically paid in Gwei, and the total fee is calculated as: Gas Used × Gas Price.
Gwei, or giga-wei, is a common ether denomination. One gwei equals 1,000,000,000 wei (109 wei) and is often used to calculate gas fees. Typically, transaction fees on Ethereum are 21,000 gwei. With the London Hard Fork in July 2021, EIP-1559 introduced a base-fee system for transactions, with optional tips to prioritize transactions.
To convert wei to gwei, divide the amount of wei by 1 billion (109). For example, 420,069,000,000 wei equals 420.069 gwei.
// formula
Wei ÷ 109 = Gwei
// example
420,069,000,000 wei ÷ 1,000,000,000 = 420.069 gweiTo convert wei to ether, divide the amount of wei by 1 quintillion (1018). For example, 100 trillion wei equals 0.0001 ETH. Multiply by the current price of ETH for the USD value.
// formula
Wei ÷ 1018 = ETH
// example
100,000,000,000,000 wei ÷ 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 = 0.0001 ETHA free Ethereum unit converter for developers and crypto users. For more blockchain tools and resources, check out my Web3 Data tools or read my articles on Medium.
